Joining a Japanese Fan Club From Overseas

Get past the name fields, then check what overseas membership actually includes. A fan-club account and concert-ticket eligibility are separate.

Some Japanese fan clubs accept overseas members, but you need the rules for the particular club—and for the benefit you want. Successfully paying the membership fee does not, by itself, establish that you can receive merchandise or use every ticket presale.

A HANABIE. fan-club discussion includes a reader who gave up at the katakana name fields. That is a solvable language problem. Overseas eligibility is a different question, and filling every field successfully will not settle it.

Decode the name fields before inventing a workaround

These common labels refer to your own name:

Japanese labelWhat the field asks for
姓 / 名Family name / given name
氏名Full name
フリガナ / カナThe reading of your name, commonly in katakana
ふりがなThe reading of your name; follow any instruction specifying hiragana
全角カタカナFull-width katakana characters
ニックネームNickname, when provided as a separate field

For example, “Alex” can be rendered phonetically as アレックス in a katakana field. That is a pronunciation aid, not a replacement identity. Keep the actual name field consistent with your identification and follow the club's instructions about alphabet characters, middle names and spacing.

Do not copy somebody else's Japanese name just to make the form accept it. JO1's registration policy, for example, requires a real name and explains that identity can be checked at member events. Other clubs set their own rules.

Check the overseas route before paying

Look for 海外 (overseas), the country selector, and an overseas-membership FAQ. A Japanese-only address form is a reason to check eligibility, rather than select Tokyo at random.

There are concrete differences even within one club. JO1's January 2026 announcement sets different payment terms for new overseas members and certain returning members: US$5 per month on the web or US$60 for twelve months, paid by card. Older automatically renewing overseas memberships can be treated differently. A price remembered from an old tutorial may therefore be wrong for a new applicant.

Use the artist's official website to reach the club. If it uses Plus member ID and you already have one, check the club's reuse instructions before creating another. JO1 explicitly tells existing ID holders to use their existing ID.

Membership and a usable concert ticket are separate checks

Read the exact event's reception page before joining solely for a presale. Check the application deadline, required membership status, phone-number requirement, ticket app, companion rules and identity check.

Here is why an old general guide can fail: JO1's 2024 summer-event instructions accepted overseas phone numbers through an overseas application route. Its JO1DER SHOW 2026 FAQ instead says a phone number contracted in Japan is required for those applications. Neither rule can be generalized to every Japanese concert.

The same principle applies to a membership gift: confirm the delivery countries for that benefit. Access to a video library and shipping a physical package are different promises.

Use the device the club supports

If registration stalls, check the published device guidance before translating the page again. HANAbee.mania describes itself as a smartphone-only site and excludes PCs. JO1 supports a different setup and recommends a normal web browser rather than an in-app browser.

Before the payment confirmation, you should know what you can enjoy from home, what needs a trip to Japan, and which language the actual member videos or posts use. An English menu does not promise English subtitles.
