Bring your original, valid passport when visiting Tokyo nightclubs as an overseas tourist, and check the venue's own entry rules. A phone photograph is not a reliable substitute. ZEROTOKYO explicitly rejects ID images, copies and expired documents in its Japanese terms.
Clubs also set their own clothing policies. You do not need to buy an imaginary “Tokyo club outfit” from a generic travel checklist. You need to know whether the place you chose permits the shoes and clothing you are wearing tonight.
Two Shinjuku clubs with rules you can read
| Check | ZEROTOKYO | WARP SHINJUKU |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary night admission | Ages 20+; ID checks for all guests | Generally 20+; some daytime events differ |
| ID | Passport and other listed photo IDs; no copies, images or expired IDs | Photo ID required; passport is specifically listed |
| Clothing | No formal dress code, but staff may refuse unsuitable clothing, including listed examples such as sandals and tank tops | No formal dress code; overly casual clothing such as sandals can be refused |
| Tattoos | Not stated on the linked entry-rules page; confirm with the venue | Exposed tattoos, including stickers and paint, may lead to refusal |
The sources are ZEROTOKYO's system page and WARP's Japanese system page. Event-specific conditions still matter.
“No formal dress code” is not a promise that every outfit gets in. For an uncomplicated first attempt, closed shoes and clothing that covers tattoos avoid some of the exclusions WARP names. This is practical preparation, not a guarantee that staff will admit you.
Check the date on the party, too
Late-night listings can belong to the evening before the calendar date you see on your phone. If you intend to arrive at 00:30 on Saturday, establish which Friday-night event is running. Then read its admission conditions, not just the club's home page.
Confirm whether your ticket is admission only, includes a drink, has an arrival cutoff or requires a separate reservation. A promotional price on a general page may not apply to a special event. WARP explicitly notes that guest and special events can change the usual admission charge.
If you need a particular ID accepted, ask the venue before buying. A driver's license being accepted somewhere else does not settle how this venue handles your country's document.
Take the right payment method
ZEROTOKYO's English FAQ states that it is cashless except for coin lockers. Bring a payment method the venue lists, rather than relying on the cash in your pocket.
For WARP, check the current admission page and entry guide. It has its own wristband, drink-ticket and re-entry arrangements. Do not carry an assumption about another club's re-entry policy into this one.
Before leaving the hotel
Have the original ID, event page, ticket and payment method ready. Check your shoes while changing is still easy. Store the hotel address and choose how you will return if you stay beyond the trains; Tokyo's after-last-train options are better read before joining the queue.
If your evening starts with a walk through the district, the Kabukicho guide helps separate a club you deliberately chose from a bar suggested by a street tout.
