A first maid-cafe visit is easier once you separate getting a seat, paying the entry charge and choosing any extras. A low admission price is only one part of the bill. The photo with a maid is a menu item too.
Two large operators, @home cafe and Maidreamin, publish their systems. Their differences are useful: you should know which one you are entering rather than expecting one set of rules for every maid cafe.
At @home, begin with the entry machine
@home's March 2026 first-visit guide describes registration through its app or the entry machine at the cafe. Everyone registers, even when it looks quiet. A first-timer can ask staff for help with the machine rather than setting up an app before the visit.
When called, you normally need to check in within 15 minutes. Keep the entry ticket and watch the call status. Registering, wandering off to buy figures and returning whenever you feel like it can cost you the place you were waiting for.
The same guide gives an adult example for ages 23–59: ¥850 entry plus a ¥720 drink, or ¥1,570. It describes a one-drink minimum and a stay of roughly one hour. This is the operator's published example, not a quote for every order or future visit. Food and a commemorative photo add to it.
Maidreamin's one-hour charge works differently
Maidreamin's official system lists ¥880 general admission per hour, plus food or drink. Extending requires another admission charge and at least one drink. Its evening HYPER service has a separate system, so confirm which service is running at the branch and time you choose.
The official booking page also offers packages and a seating-only option. Compare the inclusions before choosing: a meal, drink, photo and souvenir package answers a different request from a single drink at a table.
For a first visit, decide what you actually want before ordering. If your reason for going is the photo and the performance around a decorated drink, choose those deliberately. Buying the largest set because the menu is unfamiliar is optional.
What can you photograph?
At @home, the first-visit rules allow photos of your ordered food, menu and interior, while keeping maids and other guests out of the shot. Video and audio recording inside are prohibited. A camera pointed at your latte and a camera following the staff are treated differently.
For a picture with a maid, order the cafe's photo service. @home's official cheki guide explains the instant-photo options and additional charges for certain maid ranks. Ask what the chosen photo includes; a premium add-on is not automatically part of your drink.
At another cafe, ask before carrying these permissions across. Booking a photo does not authorize filming the rest of the room.
Enough Japanese to get started
初めてです (Hajimete desu) means “It's my first time.” Use it at the entrance, and point to the menu if you want a price clarified. You do not need to invent a character or rehearse the entire interaction.
Follow the performance as much as you enjoy it, order the things you came for and let staff handle the flow. Then check your shopping hours: Akihabara's stores and evening attractions do not all close together.
